Amateur Musical Theatre

The number of people in the UK who are involved with amateur dramatic societies exceeds the number that watch soccer. That is a phenomenal statistic and gives an indication of just how popular amateur theatre actually is.

The size and type of drama society varies greatly and can be anything from half a dozen people staging a play for one night only, to a large, semi professional company that goes on tour and competes in drama festivals.

The one thing you must remember is that just because a drama society is amateur does not mean that the

productions should be amateurish and one way of ensuring that does not happen is to appoint the right Producer / Director.

In many cases the Producer / Director are one and the same but in larger companies they are separate roles.

In 2008 Uttoxeter celebrated the 700th anniversary the day in 1308 when it was awarded a Market Charter. The charter was preceded by a general Royal Charter that the received in 1252. On Saturdays, Wednesdays and most holidays the charter is exercised.

Since 2005 Uttoxeter has been home to the Flourish Festival, which celebrates the arts of the region. The 2005 inaugural Flourish Festival, focused on local visual artists and crafts, was a resounding success – so much so that the event was expanded to include music and drama in 2006. In 2007 a food portion was added.

I have sat through hundreds of musical theatre auditions for community theatre productions, either as a producer, director, or stage manager. I can tell you that for amateur performers there is a marked delineation between the auditioners who have had competent teaching and those who have either not benefited from lessons, or who have had bad teachers. This is true for all three aspects of the musical theatre audition: singing, dancing, and acting.

The thing about lessons, especially for singers, is that your teacher will help you to find a song that is suitable for your voice. This is a valuable service that they offer, bringing their broader range of knowledge to serve their client. Your vocal teacher will be able to find a piece for you that you can master, and they will help you to master it before your audition.
